Neptune and me.

I received absolutely no comments on my LJ Neptunalia invitation, which, to be honest, surprised me! It was really very nice last year, and promises to be even more cohesive this year, since I'm not all nervous over it this time around. I already am expecting some of the Nova Roma folks, but it would be nice to get some other people to come by - is there something putting you guys off?
I hope not, but if so, please let me know what concerns you have. You do not have to be Roman or even pagan to attend.
I spoke with Marina/ Laura a while back about getting involved with the clean water groups in Tennessee, and then didn't follow up on it, so this year I plan to get moving on that. After all, what better sacrifice to the god of oceans and fresh water than to really do something about it?
I plan to make this my goal for a while, and try to get other folks interested as well. We all have an impact on our groundwater, which feeds our streams and rivers, which flow into the oceans. I've waiting to hear back from a couple of places, but I hope to get into doing some activism, maybe I can actually make a difference. It all starts at home. I've called a septic tank service to see how much it costs to have mine looked at, something I haven't done at all since we bought the place! I'm also looking into something called a rain garden, though I'm not sure that will work for us since we live on a hill. I hate the idea of composting, but I think I need to at least give it a shot, and I need to also move toward recycling, since I've seen that we can do that at the dump, we just have to sort it ourselves.
I also prefer bottled water, because I think the city water tastes like chlorine and chalk. At the very least, I need to recycle those bottles, and maybe move toward buying gallon jugs instead of the small bottles. We have a filter for water in the fridge door, but I still thought it tasted weird. I'll try it again, maybe I can reuse the small bottles that way. I'll work on it.
So I guess those are my Neptunalia resolutions.
What can you do?
1. Never dump anything down a storm drain or drainage ditch.
2. Recycle motor oil and other vehicle fluids.
3. Throw litter in its place.
4. Clean up after your pet.
5. Check your vehicles for leaks (repair them!)
6. Reduce the amount of household hazardous wastes generated at home.
7. Compost yard clippings.
8. Use fertilizer and pesticide only when needed. (Read the label!)
9. If you wash your vehicle at home, do so on the lawn rather than on pavement.
10. Tell a friend or neighbor about how to prevent stormwater pollution and get involved in your community.

Date: 2007-07-16 05:08 pm (UTC)Well, I am kinda local and would love to come but for two things:
1. It is a hella long drive and I would have needed crash space so as not to drive home exhausted.
2. I am going to be in WA visiting friends during your party.
Maybe next year? I can't wait for next PUF! I loved watching you dance, and my husband will be able to come next year. *SQUEEE!*

Wonderful!!!
Date: 2007-07-16 05:56 pm (UTC)But I was shocked to see how much stuff we had put out there since Sat.!!!!
We have a little pail w/ a lid ( we got a Home Depot for a a little bit of nothing ) and we've already put 3 buckets full out there..!!!
can you switch to the gallon jugs of water instead of the bottle? less waste that way..
I understand about the yucky water..Metro's not that great but I read somewhere the other day that City water sometimes is better than bottle due to the fact that the State/Fed Gov't has higher standers than some bottle water co. which is weird you would think it would be all the same..
We have rain barrels now.. got the barrels from the Coke plant.. great for catching water for the garden.. I wouldn't drink or bath in it..
Also we are using a hugh pan ( you can use a bucket ) to catch the water that's run when we start up for a shower.. there was HUGH surprize there..how much water just goes down the drain .
Now we catch it in the pan .. either use it on the plants or flush the commode..
good luck!!!

Date: 2007-07-16 08:27 pm (UTC)I have 3 composts for garden refuse and an enclosed bin for kitchen compost. We have free recycling here - we just put it out at the end of the driveway once a week (tommorrow!) and I recycle everything I can. It takes up a huge garbage bag every week. They take newspapers, paper, magazines and plastic and I sort it for them myself. We are on well water and it's better than bottled and on a septic tank so I am really careful what goes down the drain, too.

Date: 2007-07-16 08:50 pm (UTC)No trash pickup, Corey has to take the trash to the dump on his way to work. But I figure I can buy a couple of tuffies specifically for recycling, and see how that goes.
Composting always seemed like a real hassle, but I'll look into it and see what I can do.

Date: 2007-07-17 12:35 am (UTC)I REALLY like the idea of clean water as a devotional!
I plan to buy Lia some re-useable water/juice bottles. We use the Brita filter pitcher. Ryk has the Pur filter on his kitchen faucet. Gallon size distilled jugs are less waste than bottles, but tend to make me a little sloppy too. ("OH, there's plenty of water! It's a gallon jug!" ::slosh onto sidewalk::)
