Time for a hermie post!

My camera died the other day so now I have a new one. You guys may be seeig some random pictures from me, sorry if that's not what you want to see, but oh well. By the way, sometimes I cut pics and sometimes I don't. Kind of depends how I feel about them. If you don't like pics, and you don't know how to use a scroll button, you might want to remove me from your friends page. :-)
So, here's my hermies.

The one on the bottom is Valentino, my first crab. He has had a rough time lately, and lost his big claw on his last shed. It was my fault, I had let their cage go without a cleaning for a bit, and then he went down for a shed. That can take weeks sometimes, and the tank got really bad. So I caved and dug him out and cleaned the tank. It was really gross, and when I dug him out, he had already lost the claw. I was pretty much resigned to losing him, but he bounced back (as much as a crab can bounce, haha). He's doing much better now, he has even started to do some climbing again.
Valentino. You can see the space where his claw should be. It should grow back, but it will take a while.:

Garbo. When I first got her several months ago, she was painfully shy. If anyone walked by the tank, she clicked back into her shell. Now she is very brave and climbs all the time!

Date: 2009-10-18 08:11 pm (UTC)Outside the standard sizes are hard to come by on the second hand market. New, you can find anything you want ;)

Date: 2009-10-21 05:43 pm (UTC)What you got in the 29 gallon I had brought you? It should be about 30"X12X16" or so.
I will keep my eyes open for some other bigger tanks.
Still got the beardie? We need pics!

Date: 2009-10-22 02:56 pm (UTC)The closest we will likely come to the how about 25"X12" in a standard size is the 24"L x 12"W x 16"H (It's a 20 gallon 'high' tank) I told you about. Cai's old tank is the same size as the one I gave you, that's why I mentioned that, they are 29 gallon tanks.
Standard tank sizes go from
20"X10" (10 gallon & 16g H)
24"X12" (15g and 20g H)
30"X12" (20L, 29g and 40g XH, the latter being somewhat rare but I have seen it availale once on the local commercial market)
Since you are looking at housing hermit crabs you could also just have glass cut in the dimensions you want (or plexi for a lighter but easier to scratch tank) and silicone (if glass) or glue (if plexi) it together. You wouldn't even need the plastic rim to reinforce it since it won't have the constant water pressure pushing out. I could help if you wanted.
You could also check out the glass cages people since they are quasi-local (about an hour west of Nashville) and build custom tanks. http://glasscages.com/?sAction=Home From the reviews I have seen I wouldn't trust any of the aquatic tanks but for a hermie tank or critter tank they should be fine. Fair warning though they supposedly have the customer service skills of bull dogs.
If you decide you want the 20g high I have let me know. Right now it hasn't been spoken for and you can have the handmade lid that was on Cai's tank that fits it as well.
