jademermaid: (Neptune and fish)
I received absolutely no comments on my LJ Neptunalia invitation, which, to be honest, surprised me! It was really very nice last year, and promises to be even more cohesive this year, since I'm not all nervous over it this time around. I already am expecting some of the Nova Roma folks, but it would be nice to get some other people to come by - is there something putting you guys off?

I hope not, but if so, please let me know what concerns you have. You do not have to be Roman or even pagan to attend.

I spoke with Marina/ Laura a while back about getting involved with the clean water groups in Tennessee, and then didn't follow up on it, so this year I plan to get moving on that. After all, what better sacrifice to the god of oceans and fresh water than to really do something about it?

I plan to make this my goal for a while, and try to get other folks interested as well. We all have an impact on our groundwater, which feeds our streams and rivers, which flow into the oceans. I've waiting to hear back from a couple of places, but I hope to get into doing some activism, maybe I can actually make a difference. It all starts at home. I've called a septic tank service to see how much it costs to have mine looked at, something I haven't done at all since we bought the place! I'm also looking into something called a rain garden, though I'm not sure that will work for us since we live on a hill. I hate the idea of composting, but I think I need to at least give it a shot, and I need to also move toward recycling, since I've seen that we can do that at the dump, we just have to sort it ourselves.

I also prefer bottled water, because I think the city water tastes like chlorine and chalk. At the very least, I need to recycle those bottles, and maybe move toward buying gallon jugs instead of the small bottles. We have a filter for water in the fridge door, but I still thought it tasted weird. I'll try it again, maybe I can reuse the small bottles that way. I'll work on it.

So I guess those are my Neptunalia resolutions.

What can you do?

1. Never dump anything down a storm drain or drainage ditch.
2. Recycle motor oil and other vehicle fluids.
3. Throw litter in its place.
4. Clean up after your pet.
5. Check your vehicles for leaks (repair them!)
6. Reduce the amount of household hazardous wastes generated at home.
7. Compost yard clippings.
8. Use fertilizer and pesticide only when needed. (Read the label!)
9. If you wash your vehicle at home, do so on the lawn rather than on pavement.
10. Tell a friend or neighbor about how to prevent stormwater pollution and get involved in your community.

We tried last year, but it was just really hard to pull the choreography from the video, and the we ran out of time.

This lady has done all the work for us, she simplified it and made it able to be done to the radio version of the song! Maybe we could even participate in http://thrilltheworld.com/index.html, though I'm not sure how that would work or if that's possible.

I know we have two choreos in the works, but Miss Moody is about done, and Yeshalim is about halfway.

Shamon! I'm still wanting to dress like a dead chick. [livejournal.com profile] dement1a, let me know if you can fit this in your schedule!

So, I did some work this morning on getting involved with water quality in my area. I contacted several agencies government and private, that claim to be out there doing stuff, but they were completely flummoxed when I said I wanted to volunteer to do things. You'd have thought I was asking for them to send me some purple bananas. The government office called back and just said, "We can't help you and we don't know who to send you to."

Anyway, a guy from the Sierra club over in Memphis actually has a program for water quality, and he hooked me up with a lady doing stuff that lives in Murfreesboro. She just emailed me and invited me to a free class on water assessment. It teaches civilians how to visually assess the quality of streams and such, so that they can make reports on what areas may need their attention. I'm emailing her now, hoping they have space in the class.

The class is the day before Neptunalia.

Edit: She just wrote me back and I'm in! This is awesome!

Would anyone here be interested in a small craft swap? You can trade with anyone you like who responds, just do the address exchange through email.

So if you want to get in on a trade, just leave a message here, with:

1. What types of things you make.

2. What types of things you like.

3. Favorite/hated colors, special requests ( i.e., vegan, nothing pink)

All trades must be sent off within one month from the trade date agreement. This way there's a deadline, otherwise there can be lots of procrastination!

All trades must be worth 10 dollars or less. I think the smart thing is to keep it small. After you've traded successfully with someone, go on and up the trade value!

You can do more than one trade at once, just be sure not to take on more than you can handle, it really hurts to be on the receiving end of nothing, I've had it happen to me before.

Here's mine:

1. What types of things you make.

~~~Bellydance belts and hair falls, grocery bags, crochet items, menstrual pads and hair goodies.
2. What types of things you like.
~~~Anything water-themed, mermaids, octopuses, snakes, moons and stars.

3. Favorite/hated colors, special requests

~~~I love deep blues, purples and greens. No plastics please.
