Corey makes auto gas tanks for mostly American automakers, so we have been following things pretty closely. He works in a non-union shop, where things are starting to become dire. There will be no Christmas bonuses this year, in fact he will be taking a voluntary layoff for a month, it looks like, so that the other guys on is shift, with families will be able to at least work a few days a week and get some money in their pocket. Corey will draw unemployment and hopefully we won't lose the house and my meager paycheck will help out a little.

It's easy to hate on the big guys with their bad planning and extravagant spending, and I damn sure would like to see them tighten their belts. But a lot of things that happen with this hurt the little guys, not the big ones at all. When news of the non-buyout happened, the effect was immediate and I'm sure mostly reactionary. There are no work orders for January at this point.

The new CEO at Corey's job is hunting up some blow molding jobs outside the auto industry, so he can keep his people working. So instead of gas tanks, they might be making ocean buoys and port-a-potty tanks. But since production i down everywhere, it's a tough sell. We'll see.

I know that its a bad situation for Corey and I pray that it will get better. However, I believe strongly that the bail out is a bad thing just as I believed that the last one was a bad thing.

Pay me now or pay me later is the way of things but, as you well know, when you pay me later, the ill tends to be a lot bigger.

I am glad to read that the CEO is not being hide-bound to the automotive industry....

You are both in my prayers.

I'm hoping the best for you both. We've had a couple of layoffs at my work as well, and one of the guys in my department has agreed to go part time.

For what it's worth, I'm here for you both.

Didn't the wealthy learn anything from Madam Guillotine? ::sigh::

Seriously, though, good luck.

Thomas' mom makes the rubber thingies that go around car windows. She's in "voluntary" short work weeks through January -- 3-4 days depending. It really sucks. I'm thankful every day that Thomas and I are gainfully employed. Hang in there!
